Predictions cover changing consumer expectations with an emphasis on technology, access and quality of care

MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis., Nov. 1, 2022SKYGEN, the leading provider of software as a service (SaaS) and third-party administration (TPA) solutions for dental and vision benefits management, has released its predictions for how the specialty benefits industry will continue to evolve and what that means for payers, providers and patients in the next decade.

“The special benefits industry is continuously evolving and so are consumers,” said Craig Kasten, SKYGEN founder and managing member. “Patients are increasingly taking control of their healthcare, demanding quality, affordable care options. We have a vested interest in these trends as it relates to our own clients to help them stay at the forefront of the industry.”

As consumers continue to reevaluate the importance of healthcare, which includes their oral and optical health, they are demanding more of their healthcare and insurance providers alike. This demand is driving the specialty benefits industry.

SKYGEN predicts a number of changes to the industry stemming from this change in consumer expectations.

  • As corporate dental continues to expand, several entities will vie to become the U.S. market leader in dental benefits. The rise of corporate dental is inevitable – it’s happening now – which will mean a shift in who controls the market.
  • The rise of virtual dentistry will lead to a rise in second opinions, giving patients more control. Patients increasingly have access to their healthcare providers and records at their fingertips. They can more easily do their own research into their recommended care.
  • Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will develop a value-based compensation approach for dental services. While not a new concept in healthcare overall, value-based compensation has previously not existed in the dental industry.
  • Vision insurers will need to include more diverse online eyewear vendor network options. This will be essential to retain and grow customer bases as consumers increasingly want the most popular styles at the most affordable prices.
