NADP Executive Director Eme
Augustini shared the following statement via social media outlets
regarding racial disparities in oral health. During NADP’s virtual
Advocacy in Action event, NADP members discussed this issue with Members
of Congress and provided examples of how their companies address racial
disparities in oral health.
Executive Director Statement:
“Like many of you, I’ve watched
the events of the past weeks and wondered how to respond. It’s
difficult to talk about, and I’m worried about saying the wrong thing –
but I see the injustice our society is grappling with, and the pain that
has been inflicted on our friends and neighbors. The recent killings of George
Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery have sparked national outcry,
and forced us to confront abuses of power in our society and the reality
of daily life for Black Americans. Direct, systemic, and institutional
racism underlie and perpetuate economic, social, and health disparities
for communities of color. The reality and urgency of
racial justice is bigger than any of us, but we must do better. We can
start in our own community and industry. My commitment is that I will
work to:
- understand the oral health
disparities in our society and identify ways to improve access to
affordable, quality dental care for communities of color- support a workplace culture that celebrates diversity, and where it feels safe to speak out about racial injustices
- listen and learn from you about how we can do better as an Association and industry
This doesn’t feel like enough,
but it’s a place to start. This is the beginning of a conversation about
what we can do together, and I’m asking for your ideas and support.”
