NADP 2021 Dental Benefits Report: Premiums 

Dental premiums continued a long trend of increases well below the inflation rate, with the average premium rising less than 1% in 2021 compared to 2020 premiums. In addition to the national average premium for 2020 and 2021, the NADP Dental Benefits Report: 2021 Premium reports the average premium per member per month and includes data by product type (DHMO, DPPO, Dental Indemnity), group size (Large, Small and Individual), and at the state level for 2021.

NADP 2022 Dental Benefits Report: Plan Design

The Plan Design Report includes data reported by product type (DHMO, DPPO, and Dental Indemnity). In addition, the report consists of data about Annual Maximum levels, enrollees reaching the Annual Maximum, Lifetime Orthodontia Maximums, Deductible levels, and information about the percentage of enrollment in plans with unique features like Max Rollover, Preventive and Diagnostic Credits, and Graduated Benefits. This report can be a valuable benchmark for a carrier’s book of business.

2021 Benefit Utilization Report

The 2021 NADP Benefit Utilization Report includes data on non-DHMO dental insurance paid dental procedures per 1,000 enrollees by the month, by state and by benefit sponsor (group, individual, and Medicare Advantage). The report also includes trends in in-force enrollment by quarter.

2021 State of the Dental Benefits Market

This report serves as a primer for understanding the dental benefits market by highlighting key trends in enrollment, premiums, claims processing metrics, customer service metrics and employer and consumer opinion. In addition to summarizing key trends in the industry, NADP offers its view on what to expect in the year to come from an economic and public policy perspective. State-specific information includes statistics on enrollment and dental workforce, with national data on enrollment trends, changes in premium, product funding, offerings by group size and enrollment in dental benefits by household income.

Consumer Tracking Study

In 2021, dental coverage declined among U.S. consumers 18 years of age and older, according to the recently published NADP 2021 Consumer Dental Health and Benefits Tracking Study. The study found that 61% of U.S. consumers ages 18 and over carried a dental benefits plan in 2021, down from a high of 67% coverage in 2018.
