Dr. Barnett chaired NADP’s Board of Directors from 1998 through mid-2000. He was first elected to the Board in 1997. In 1997, he chaired the Public Relations Commission and served as Annual Conference Chair as well as serving on the Membership Commission. In 1995 and 1996, he served on the Education Commission and Membership Commission holding the Vice-Chair position on the Education Commission in 1995. He was also a two-time Annual Conference chairman. In his various roles with NADP, Dr. Barnett testified on NADP’s behalf before Congressional Committees and the Department of Labor, spoke to the American Dental Education Association’s Dental School Deans’ Summit and represented NADP at two Dental Ethics Summits sponsored by the American College of Dentists.
As an advocate of planning to support the industry’s future, he spearheaded NADP’s Long-Range Planning Task Force in 1999 and brought the thinking of that group to the membership in a reorganization plan later that year. Dr. Barnett was in an unprecedented third term as Chairman of the Board when he left the industry to head a new electronic commerce venture, HealthASPex. Despite leaving the dental benefits industry, his former colleagues still hold his work in the industry and with NADP in high regard as this nomination attests.
Dr. Barnett was President of Managed Care for Protective Dental Care through mid-2000. He joined United Dental Care in 1995 as Senior Vice President and was instrumental in both the public offering of UDC and the sale of UDC to Protective. Prior to joining UDC, Dr. Barnet was Executive Director of Prudential’s DMO Southern Group Operations in Atlanta, Georgia from 1994 to 1005 and a consultant for HealthCare Venture Associates in Irving from 1993 to 1994. Prior to that time he was with Pearle Vision for eight years.
He taught at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine for five years while in dental practice at the beginning of his career. He holds a BA in Biology Cum Laude from Colgate University in NY, A DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and a Master of Business Administration in Health Care Administration from the Wharton School.
