The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has extended the federal public health emergency through July 15, 2022. To maintain certain health care waivers and flexibilities, the PHE related to the COVID-19 pandemic must be extended every 90 days. The Administration has said in a letter to state governors that they will give at minimum a 60-day notice before the PHE ends. Since January 27, 2020, the PHE has been extended eight times: April 21, 2020, July 23, 2020, October 2, 2020, January 7, 2021, April 15, 2021, July 19, 2021, October 15, 2021, and January 14, 2022. In his statement released on April 12, Secretary Xavier Becerra states the renewal “as a result of the continued consequences of the Coronavirus Disease 2019.” The July 15, 2022, extension was made effective on April 16, 2022.
