March

While the current pandemic curtailed travel for numerous March meetings, NADP continued to serve as the voice of the dental benefits industry to key stakeholders. NADP also advanced the industry by providing invaluable member resources.

Dr. Charles D. Stewart, Aetna, Kristen Strasheim, Ameritas Life, and NADP Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown represented the dental benefits industry at the recent American Dental Association Code Maintenance Committee meeting March 11-13 in Chicago. Attendees reviewed submissions for CDT 2021 revisions.

NCOIL

NADP Executive Director Eme Augustini and Associate Director of Government Relations Artur Bagyants attended the spring meeting for National Council of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) March 6 – 8 in Charlotte, NC to voice industry opposition to provisions of the “Patient Dental Care Bill of Rights Model Act,” proposed by the American Dental Association. Eme serves on the NCOIL Health Insurance and Long-term Care Issues Committee. See related article (GRW Tracking State Issues …).

Chartered by the American National Standards Institute, X12 develops and maintains electronic data interchange standards which drive business processes globally.

Canadian Dental Association

NADP's Director of Research, Jerry Berggren, spoke to the Canadian Dental Association's Meeting of CEOs and Registrars about the U.S. Dental Benefits market in New Orleans on Dec. 5. It was a great opportunity to compare and contrast how dental benefits work on both sides of the border.


NCOIL

NADP Executive Director Eme Augustini and State Affairs Manager Artur Bagyants represented the dental benefits industry at the recent National Conference of Insurance Legislators meeting in Austin, Texas. Augustini submitted testimony on a proposed network leasing model legislation.


IAEE EXPO!EXPO! 2019

At the International Association of Exhibitions and Events conference, EXPO, EXPO, Dec. 3-5 in Las Vegas, NADP staff engaged in professional development to gain insight into providing attendees and exhibitors with the ultimate conference experience. Attendees included Administrative Director Shayne Leatherwood, Director of Meeting and Events Jeremy May and Associate Director of Communications and Technology Lauren Oakley.


Staff OFFSITE Retreat

Gratitude, support, learning, and planning were the name of the game for NADP's staff offsite retreat on Dec. 16. Thank you, Rhonda Greenstreet and Jon Seltenheim for facilitating, to Careington International Corporation for hosting us (Valerie Bostrom, Kris Virgin, Jeremy Hedrick) and to the NADP Board of Directors and membership for your ongoing support. Our team building (really, team flourishing) wouldn’t have been possible without you all.

AADC

Dental Informatics Manager Brian Flynn represented that dental benefits industry at the American Association of Dental Consultants (AADC) Annual Meeting and Workshop May 2-5 in Scottsdale, Arizona. The goal of AADC is to connect dentists and others involved in dental benefits consulting and administration, to identify and promote best practices and to advance education and promote a common base of knowledge for consistent, evidence-based plan and claims evaluations.

 

DQA

Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown represented the dental benefits industry at the recent Dental Quality Alliance (DQA) meeting, Nov. 1-2 in Chicago. The mission of the DQA is to advance performance measurement as a means to improve oral health, patient care and safety through a consensus-building process.

NADP Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown traveled to Chicago for the SNOMED Dentistry Clinical Reference Group (CRG) meeting Feb. 22. The Dentistry CRG met to review and approve terms and terminology for inclusion in the international version of SNOMED.

NADP Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown represented the dental benefits industry at the American Dental Association Standards Committee on Dental Informatics meetings, Feb. 19 in Chicago. SCDI develops industry standards and guidelines for electronic transactions.

  • ADA SNODENT

NADP Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown traveled to Chicago for the American Dental Association SNODENT Maintenance Committee meeting Feb. 20. SNODENT stands for Systematized Nomenclature of Dentistry, which is a vocabulary designed to provide standardized terms for describing dental disease. The ADA SNODENT committee reviews and proposes terms and terminology for inclusion in SNODENT and the US realm of SNOMED.

 

  • ADA Council on Dental Benefits

NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE and Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown represented the dental benefits industry along with the full NADP Board of Directors at the American Dental Association Council on Dental Benefits meeting May 1 in Chicago.

 

  • ADA Administrative Efficiencies Summit

On Aug. 17 NADP members and staff represented the dental benefits industry at the ADA Administrative Efficiencies Summit in Chicago. NADP member attendees included Dr. Mary Lee Conicella, Aetna; Eric Kirnbauer, Tesia; Art Schoen, Aspen and Chris Williams, Guardian. Director of Government Relations Eme Augustini served as the voice of the dental benefits industry at the Better Medicare Alliance (BMA) Annual Ally Strategy Meeting on Feb. 6 in Washington, D.C.

CADP

On March 1, NADP Director of Government Relations Eme Augustini will address attendees of the California Association of Dental Plans’ Annual Conference + Hill Day in Sacramento. She will be joined by fellow panelists and NADP/CADP members Richard Jones, Guardian, and Crystal McElroy, MetLife, as they present, The Political Landscape from Coast to Coast.

 

OH 2020

On March 2, NADP Director of Research Jerry Berggren presented findings from recent a Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) to an Oral health 2020 workgroup. The findings, which were highlighted in an NADP press release issued in November, reported the impact of preventive dental care on the cost for care of Medicaid patients with certain chronic conditions. The Oral Health 2020 workgroup is seeking to expand Medicaid dental benefits to adult populations. The NADP presentation was made via conference call and with the workgroup’s permission we are able to make the audio of that presentation available. 

PAC Conference

Artur Bagyants represented the dental benefits industry at the National PAC Conference, hosted by the Public Affairs Council, March 4-7 in Miami, Florida.

AIA

On March 22, more than 50 NADP members and staff [link to attendee list] advanced the dental benefits industry’s priorities in meeting with elected official in Washington, D.C.

National Oral Health Conference

Director of Government Relations Eme Augustini served as the voice of the dental benefits industry at the National Oral Health Conference, April 15-17 in Louisville, Kentucky.

 

MSDA

Director of Government Relations Eme Augustini served as the voice of the dental benefits industry at the Medicaid-CHIP State Dental Association Symposium June 4-8 in Washington, D.C.

 

New Jersey

NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE, traveled to Trenton to lead opposition panels in a June 18 hearing before the New Jersey Senate Commerce Committee on SB 2507, which proposed the prohibition of network leasing.

NADP Government Relations Analyst Artur Bagyants represented the dental benefits industry at the summer meeting of the National Conference of Insurance Legislators in Salt Lake City, July 12-15.

 

NJDA

NAIC Summer 2018 National Meeting

NADP Director of Government Affairs Eme Augustini served as your industry voice and representative at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ Summer 2018 National Meeting, Aug. 4-7 in Boston, Massachusetts. Topics covered included:

  • How innovation, new technologies and changing consumer expectations are rapidly reshaping the insurance industry.
  • Steps regulators are taking to better understand, as well as promote, innovation that benefits consumers in the insurance marketplace.
  • How regulation will need to innovate in order to keep pace with the changes occurring in the insurance industry.

ACLI

Director of Government Relations Eme Augustini served as the voice of the dental benefits industry at the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) Annual Conference Oct. 7-9 in Washington, D.C.  The conference program addressed legal, investment/financial, reinsurance, compliance, retirement security, advocacy, and legislative and regulatory issues affecting life insurance and financial services companies.

 

New Jersey Meetings

In November, NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE, our New Jersey lobbying team, and Ward Sanders of the New Jersey Association of Health Plans (NJAHP) presented industry views regarding the network leasing bill in separate meetings with officials from the NJ Department of Banking and Insurance plus the Assembly Majority Office (Democrat). AARP Magazine -- NADP provided background information regarding dental coverage and benefit types for this publication targeting senior adults.

Five Tips for Patients Without Dental Insurance (press release) -- Author Kevin Henry cited NADP research on the number of people without dental coverage in a recent press release announcing his new book, Battling and Beating the Demons of Dental Assisting.

NADP Press Release – NADP distributed the press release, “Dental Plans Leaders Take Tax and Market Concerns to the Hill,” regarding Advocacy in Action, the association’s Congressional fly-in.

NADP’s volunteers routinely review a prepublication copy of the CDT providing feedback on the alignment of the publication with CMC action. As a result, members that obtain their CDT License through NADP get early access to the publication.

ADA Council on Dental Benefits

NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE and Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown represented the dental benefits industry along with the full NADP Board of Directors at the American Dental Association Council on Dental Benefits meeting April 10-12 in Chicago.

SNOMED International

NADP Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown represented the dental benefits industry at SNOMED International, formerly the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO), in London, England, April 21-28. Later in the year NADP SNOMED SubWorkGroup Chair Dr. Roger Adams, Avesis and NADP Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown traveled to Bratislava, Slovak Republic for the Oct. 18-25 meeting. SNOMED International determines global standards for health terms, an essential part of improving the health of humankind. NADP provided valuable industry feedback regarding the recently released odontogram reference set of dental diagnostic codes.

NADP Informatics Manager Brian Flynn represented the dental benefits industry at the X12, Code Maintenance Committee and Dental Caucus meetings June 4 -8 in San Antonio. Discussion topics included 7030 developments. X12, chartered by the American National Standards Institute, develops and maintains standards, which drive business processes globally. AHIP Institute

NADP Director of Government Relations Eme Augustini and Director of Research Jerry Berggren traveled to Austin, Texas for America’s Health Insurance Programs’ Institute, June 7-9.

CMS

In August NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE, held a follow-up meeting at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid regarding critical industry issues such as application of provider enrollment requirements for dentists in Medicare Advantage (MA) networks. NADP’s advocacy in combination with the ADA and DDPA led to CMS dropping the requirement for dentist registration for Part C MA networks.

NCSL

Director of Government Relations Eme Augustini traveled to Boston, Massachusetts for the National Conference of State Legislatures Legislative Summit Aug. 6 -9. Part of the NCSL mission is to improve the quality and effectiveness of state legislatures.

NASHP

NADP Government Relations Analyst Artur Bagyants represented the dental benefits industry during the National Academy for State Health Policy’s 30th Annual State Health Policy Conference, Oct. 23-25 in Portland, OR. NASHP provides a forum for constructive work across branches and agencies of state government on critical health issues

Oral Health 2020 National Network Gathering

NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE, participated in Oral Health 2020 National Network Gathering, Oct. 25-27, in Atlanta, Georgia. The annual gathering provides an opportunity for the network to meet face-to-face, connect with new partners, challenge one another, and track progress against the six Oral Health 2020 goals to improve lifelong oral health and eradicate dental disease in children.

On Nov. 17, NADP Executive Director Evelyn Ireland, CAE, presented at the Oregon Oral Health Coalition Conference, Winds of Change in Oregon’s Healthcare Climate.

NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE presented at the Group Underwriters Association of American Annual Conference May 21-24 in Denver, Colorado.

NAHU

Because the broker community outreach remains a high a priority, NADP Director of Membership and Communications Rene Chapin and Associate Director of Communications and Technology Lauren Oakley participating in the National Association of Health Underwriters Trade Show in Orlando, Florida June 25-27. NADP promotes the value of dental benefits and increases brand awareness for the association and industry during this event.

NADP Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown shared the unique positions of the dental industry at the recent 2017 Health Level 7 International Working Group Meeting, May 6-12 in Madrid, Spain. HL7 is a leader in the development, adoption and implementation of electronic data interchange standards. NADP holds a voting position on the Dental Caucus.

NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE presented at the Group Underwriters Association of American Annual Conference May 21-24 in Denver, Colorado. UCCI

NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE, represented NADPac at a Harrisburg fundraiser last week for Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania that was organized by United Concordia Companies, Inc. (UCCI). Senator Casey serves on both the Senate Finance and Health, Education, Labor and Pension (HELP) Committees, which have jurisdiction over the key policy issues affecting dental plans. In addition to the fundraiser, she presented an overview of recent NADP data and advocacy to UCCI staff including their many participants on NADP volunteer groups.
