NADP On The Move in 2017

As the representative and recognized voice of the dental benefits industry, NADP continues to advance your positions among key stakeholders and the media. The following are highlights of key meetings, interviews, articles and press releases which advanced the dental benefits industry.

April

This month the voice of the dental benefits industry resonated clearly with multiple stakeholders and the media.

Meetings

ADA Council on Dental Benefits

NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE and Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown represented the dental benefits industry along with the full NADP Board of Directors at the American Dental Association Council on Dental Benefits meeting April 10-12 in Chicago.

UCCI

NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE, represented NADPac at a Harrisburg fundraiser last week for Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania that was organized by United Concordia Companies, Inc. (UCCI). Senator Casey serves on both the Senate Finance and Health, Education, Labor and Pension (HELP) Committees, which have jurisdiction over the key policy issues affecting dental plans. In addition to the fundraiser, she presented an overview of recent NADP data and advocacy to UCCI staff including their many participants on NADP volunteer groups.

SNOMED

NADP Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown is representing the dental benefits industry at SNOMED International in London, England, April 21-28.

Oral Health Conference

NADP Director of Government Relations Eme Augustini traveled to Albuquerque to represent members at the 2017 National Oral Health Conference April 24-26. The conference is designed for stakeholders collaborating to improve the public’s oral health.

Press Release - The NADP press release, “Dental Plans Meet with Members of Congress to Encourage Consumer Access and Incentives to Dental Benefits,” highlighted Advocacy in Action. The release was published in several business and financial publications such as the Wall Street Journal (online only), MarketWatch, The Kansas Republican, and Value News plus in major media outlets across the nation including Anchorage, Carlsbad, Columbia (SC), Kansas City, Lexington, Myrtle Beach, Oakland, Pasadena, Sacramento, San Diego, Seattle and numerous editions of the Business Journal

NADP Director of Government Relations Eme Augustini represented the dental benefits industry at the National Conference of Insurance Legislators spring meeting in New Orleans, March 3-5.

ADA CMC

Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown and Dr. Charles Stewart, Aetna, presented your industry submissions for consideration during the recent American Dental Association Code Maintenance Committee meeting March 8-10 in Chicago.

SNODENT

NADP Informatics Manager Brian Flynn served as your industry representative on diagnostic codes during the recent SNODENT meeting, March 1, in Chicago.

Washington Post - Reporter Kevin Sullivan interviewed Executive Director Evelyn Ireland, CAE, regarding several dental benefits basics, including why dental coverage is often separate from medical coverage.

ADA Standards Committee on Dental Informatics (SCDI)

NADP Dental Informatics Manager Brian Flynn is representing the dental benefits industry at the American Dental Association Standards Committee on Dental Informatics meeting, Feb. 28 in Chicago. SCDI develops industry standards and guidelines for electronic transactions.

SNODENT

NADP Dental Informatics Manager Brian Flynn is representing the dental benefits industry at the American Dental Association SNODENT Maintenance Committee meeting March 1 in Chicago. SNODENT stands for Systematized Nomenclature of Dentistry, which is a vocabulary designed to provide standardized terms for describing dental disease.

Boston Globe - NADP provided information to reporter Priyanka McCluskey regarding national and state trends in the dental benefits industry.

Daily Hampshire Gazette – Reporter NADP Jack Suntrup contacted NADP to learn more about direct reimbursement plans, HSAs and how they compare to dental benefits plans.

Meetings

HL7

Serving as your voice, Dental Informatics Manager Brian Flynn traveled to San Antonio, Texas for the recent Health Level 7 (HL7) meeting, Jan. 18-19. HL7 workgroups develop the content for electronic transactions standards. As voting members of the HL7 Attachments, Clinical Quality and Electronic Health Records Workgroups, NADP advocates for the unique needs and requirements of dental transactions to ensure your company’s operations run smoothly.

X12

Dental Informatics Manager Brian Flynn will represent the dental benefits industry at the winter 2017 X12 Standing Meeting in Seattle, Washington. ASC X12, chartered by the American National Standards Institute, develops and maintains EDI and CICA standards along with XML schemas which drive business processes globally.

PAC Conference

Director of Government Relations Eme Augustini will travel to Key West, Florida for the Public Affairs Council Advocacy Conference, Jan. 30-Feb. 2. The conference offers three learning tracks: grassroots, communication and engagement.

In January NADP provided background information to the following publications:

Commercial Appeal – NADP provided information about the numbers of people covered by dental benefits, both nationally and in Tennessee.

Dr. Bicuspid – NADP provided a copy of the Dental Plan Profile as background for an article about dental enrollment.

  • Health care industry expert Michael Roub has been named Vice President of Business Development for Western Dental & Orthodontics, and its affiliate – Brident Dental & Orthodontic, which is what the company goes by at its Texas clinics. (Read more)
