Exploring post-traumatic stress among patients at a clinic for orofacial pain and dysfunction

The presence of PTSD in this clinical sample was associated with the presence of painful TMD and awake bruxism. The presence of a reported potentially traumatic event without PTSD was not associated with painful TMD or awake bruxism. Finally, when examining symptom severity, the severity of awake bruxism was correlated to post-traumatic stress symptoms.

An association between poor oral health, oral microbiota, and pain identified in New Zealand women with central sensitisation disorders: a prospective clinical study

Low oral health scores correlated with higher pain scores. Both were associated with higher relative abundance of oral pathobionts. This suggests a potential role for the oral microbiota in the aetiology of pain experienced by women with migraine headache and abdominal and body pain. These findings prompt consideration of an oral microbiome–nervous system axis.

International Trends in Dental Opioid Prescriptions

This cross-sectional study found that the US dental opioid dispensing rate is decreasing but remains high by international standards. Findings suggest opportunities to reduce this rate exist. This notion is further supported by data showing that two-thirds of US dental opioid prescriptions are for tooth extraction, a procedure for which ibuprofen and acetaminophen are equally effective for pain control.4,5 Compared with the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium, dental opioid dispensing rates were consistently higher in Canada, France, Australia, and Puerto Rico, suggesting opportunities to reduce these rates may also exist.
