NEW YORK, NY (Jan 8, 2016) - Columbia University College of Dental Medicine (CDM) announced today that it has appointed Joseph V. Errante, DDS to a newly created position, Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Services. Over the past several months, Dr. Errante has assisted CDM in a consulting capacity, providing extensive input on strategic planning for the College.

"I am very excited that Joe Errante is joining our exceptional team," stated Christian Stohler, DMD, DrMedDent, Dean of the College and Senior Vice President of Columbia University Medical Center, who made the announcement. "With his background in the dental group practice management and health insurance industries, Joe brings a broad and deep understanding of the complex nature of the business side of our profession which is very rare. Joe will be a significant asset as we prepare our students for the future and advance our long-term goals as a leader in teaching, research and patient care."

Dr. Errante’s responsibilities will include executive management and strategic leadership of all CDM clinical operations, including faculty practice, teaching clinics, and community clinics. He will be charged with leading change management efforts to improve clinical performance in healthcare outcomes, compliance, and finance as well as in patient, student, and faculty satisfaction. He will collaborate with CDM faculty and administration to develop and implement transformative models of clinical care delivery, including those made possible by technological advances and those that are enabled by inter-professional practice. Dr. Errante will also source, develop, and execute partnerships with various external entities who are stakeholders in the future of dental practice.

Dr. Errante added, "I am thrilled to join Dean Stohler and CDM's stellar faculty, clinicians and administration, some of whom I have known for several years. CDM already is at the forefront of dental education, is committed to excellence and innovation and is poised to remain a leader as technology advances in teaching, research and practice management. The research opportunities, clinical initiatives and interdisciplinary academic programs here have limitless potential. It also is a tremendous privilege to be a part of Columbia University and its
eminent Medical Center."

A nationally recognized executive in the dental profession, Dr. Errante brings over 30 years of experience in dentistry and entrepreneurship to his new role. He has built, operated and sold leading dental benefit businesses, large dental group practices and niche healthcare delivery systems.

While in the clinical practice of dentistry in the 1980s, Dr. Errante and a small team of dedicated partners began to build a vertically integrated oral health care delivery system that included a dental benefits company and a large dental group practice. In the late 1990s, he joined another team of dedicated professionals to help shape and grow American Dental Partners, Inc. (ADPI). ADPI has remained one of the largest Dental Practice Management firms in the country. ADPI operated as a public company from 1998 to 2012 and is now privately held by Private Equity Investors. Dr. Errante was a key operating executive on the team that rapidly grew the company and extended it into adjacent businesses.

From 2004 to 2010, Dr. Errante was privileged to have had the opportunity to lead a team at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) that successfully revitalized BCBSMA’s dental insurance business and made it one of the fastest growing business lines at the company.

From 2010 to 2013, he served as Chief Executive Officer of a healthcare delivery system that was focused on providing care to residents of skilled nursing facilities in multiple states in the Northeast and Midwest.

Dr. Errante received a DDS degree from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry and a BS in nutritional biochemistry from the University of Arizona. Dr. Errante's professional memberships include the American Dental Association (ADA), Massachusetts Dental Society and the American Academy of Dental Group Practice (where he is Past President). Previously he was a member of the National Association of Dental Plans. Family and tradition are very important to Dr. Errante and he and his wife spend much of their personal time involved in activities with their two adult children and their grandson.

About Columbia University College of Dental Medicine

Columbia University College of Dental Medicine (CDM) was founded in 1916, and traces its origin to 1852, when the New York State legislature chartered the New York College of Dentistry, later renamed the New York College of Dental and Oral Surgery. CDM offers the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree, postdoctoral specialty education and dual degrees with other schools and colleges of Columbia University. CDM is a part of Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC), which also includes the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Mailman School of Public Health and School of Nursing, in addition to affiliated teaching hospitals. Admission to CDM is highly selective - nearly one in five of dental school applications are submitted to Columbia - and applicants have achieved one of the highest national Dental Admission Test (DAT) averages.

CDM faculty and students collaborate with colleagues from a wide range of disciplines at CUMC, Columbia University and peer institutions throughout the U.S. and around the world, incorporating clinical, research, and public policy approaches to oral health issues. CDM is the largest provider of primary and specialty oral health care in the Northern Manhattan communities of Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood. CDM is accreditated by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
