As the voice of the dental benefits industry, NADP continues to carry your message to industry stakeholders and the media. Following are highlights from this month’s meetings and interviews.

Meetings

NAHU

Director of Research Jerry Berggren and Director of Membership and Communications Rene Chapin participated in the National Association of Health Underwriters Trade Show in Scottsdale, Arizona, June 29-July 1.  NADP promoted the value of dental benefits and increased brand awareness for the association during this event.

DQA

Dr. Craig Amundson, HealthPartners, Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown and NADP Informatics Manager, Brian Flynn, represented the dental benefits industry during the recent Dental Quality Alliance (DQA) meeting July 9-11 in Chicago. NADP serves on the DQA Executive Committee. The mission of the DQA is to advance performance measurement as a means to improve oral health, patient care and safety through a consensus-building process.

Washington, D.C.

On July 22 NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE, and Director of Government Relations Kris Hathaway met with key officials from the U.S. Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service regarding the Advanced Premium Tax Credits (APTC.) NADP reviewed the policy, legal and financial impacts of the IRS calculation. (See related article)

Washington, D.C. Fundraiser

NADPac held a fundraiser luncheon July 22 for Senator Mark Warner (Virginia) in Washington, D.C. Co-hosts included Assurant, MetLife and United Concordia Dental, with additional contributions from CIGNA, Dominion Dental, Guardian and Principal.

NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE, was interviewed by industry freelance writer Bruce Shutan regarding the growth of dental self-insured products (ASO –Administrative Services Only) in the marketplace.

 

June

X12

NADP Informatics Manager Brian Flynn represented the dental benefits industry at the X12, Code Maintenance Committee and Dental Caucus meetings June 1-5 in New Orleans, Louisiana.  X12, chartered by the American National Standards Institute, develops and maintains standards, which drive business processes globally.  As your representative, NADP monitors developments of healthcare standards to ensure the unique needs of the dental industry are met.

CADP

On June 12 NADP member Jeff Album, Delta Dental of California, Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE and Michael Lewan, The Lewan Company, presented “Dental On and Off State Exchanges: Where’s the Next Battlefront?” at the California Association of Dental Plan (CADP) Annual Conference in San Diego.  Executive Director Evelyn Ireland also presented an overview of the results of NADP’s loss ratio survey for CA and explained the proposal presented to CDA and Assemblywoman Skinner on AB1962. 

NAHU

Last week, NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE, traveled to Sacramento to support the California Association of Dental Plans (CADP)  lobby negotiations regarding dental loss ratios.  She provided industry statistics and insights to assist in the negotiations.

AADC

Deputy Executive Director Timothy Brown and Dental Informatics Manager Brian Flynn represented the dental benefits industry at the American Association of Dental Consultants annual workshop May 5-9 in Albuquerque.

GUAA

NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE presented at the Group Underwriters Association of American Annual Conference May 18-21 in San Francisco.

International Symposium on Dental Plans

NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE, offered insights regarding the U.S. dental benefits industry to attendees of the International Symposium on Dental Plans, May 8-9 in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

WEDI

Deputy Executive Director Timothy Brown and Dental Informatics Manager Brian Flynn shared the unique views of the dental industry during the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange Annual Conference May 12-14 in Hollywood.

HL 7

Dental Informatics Manager Brian Flynn represented the dental benefits industry at May 4-9 HL 7 Working Group Meeting, Unlocking the Power of Health Information, in Phoenix.

FFM Summit

Director of Government Relations Kris Hathaway attended the National Institutes of Health for a day-long session presented by Health and Human Services in Bethesda, Maryland. The session provided attendees operational updates on the Federally-facilitated Marketplace (FFM).

NADP provided interviews and background information to the following media outlets this month:

Employee Benefit News - Freelance writer Bruce Shutan interviewed NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE, regarding dental benefits and the Affordable Care Act. Additional questions focused on the move to voluntary benefits, the use of health savings accounts, flexible savings account and innovations in products and services.

National Public Radio - NADP provided background information regarding the various types of dental benefits and what they cover to reporter Ted Robbins.

GantDaily.com - NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE, was quoted regarding dental plans in the May 19 article, Gaps in Kids’ Dental Coverage a Trouble Spot. 

 


April

NADP staff and volunteers advanced the dental benefits industry in April by representing your interests with key audiences including the American Dental Association (ADA) and U.S. National Oral Health Alliance. (U.S. NOHA)

ADA Council on Dental Benefit Programs

Discount Dental Plan Summit

NADP Director of Government Relations Kris Hathaway will represent NADP members at Fourth Annual Discount Dental Plan Summit, hosted by DentalPlans.com, from April 30-May 2 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

IHTSDO

NADP Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown will share the dental benefits industry perspective during the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO) meeting April 27-30 in Copenhagen, Denmark.  IHTSDO develops, maintains, promotes and enables the uptake and correct use of its terminology products in health systems, services and products around the world. IHTSDO owns and administers the rights to SNOMED CT, the most comprehensive, multilingual clinical healthcare terminology in the world.

National Oral Health Conference

On April 29, NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland, CAE, presented on the impact of the Affordable Care Act on dental plans at the National Oral Health Conference in Fort Worth, Texas.  The conference is the 15th joint meeting of the Association of State & Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD) and the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD).  The meeting brings together over 700 leaders in dental public health from across the nation.

March

NADP continues to serve as the voice of the dental benefits industry. In March volunteers and staff carried your message to a multitude of stakeholders and media. In addition to vital visits to Washington, D.C. and key media interviews, NADP represented our members to the following organizations: America’s Health Insurance Plans, National Conference of Insurance Legislators and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Director of Government Relations Kris Hathaway traveled to Washington, D.C. for the AHIP Plans Policy and Exchange Conference March 4-7. 

 

NCOIL

State Affairs Manager Eme Augustini traveled to Savannah, Georgia for the NCOIL Spring Meeting, March 7-8.  Agenda items included discussions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and underwriting.

 

Washington, D.C.

Executive Director Evelyn Ireland served as your industry voice on ACA issues during multiple visits with Members of Congress and agencies in our nation’s capital. 

 

NAIC

Director of Government Relations Kris Hathaway represented NADP members at the NAIC Spring 2014 National Meeting March 29 – April in Orlando, Florida.  The agenda featured multiple sessions focused on various ACA aspects.

Journal News Medical Group - Reporter Jane Learner interviewed NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland regarding dental care and the ACA, including subsidies for pediatric dental.

Kaiser Health News – Marissa Evans interviewed NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland regarding ACA and dental benefits. Her article has not yet been published.

 

 


February

This past month NADP served as the voice of the dental benefits industry to the media and influential groups overseeing electronic transactions and regulations affecting your company. NADP collaborated with the following organizations; the American Dental Association, California Association of Dental Plans and the 2014 Program Integrity Summit. ADA Standards Committee on Dental Informatics (SCDI)

NADP Dental Informatics Manager Brian Flynn represented the dental benefits industry during the American Dental Association Standards Committee on Dental Informatics meeting, Feb. 19-20 in Chicago. SCDI develops industry standards and guidelines for electronic transactions.

ADA Code Maintenance Committee (CMC)

NADP Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown and Dental Informatics Manager Brian Flynn are sharing the industry viewpoints this regarding revisions to Current Dental Terminology (CDT) codes during the CMC meeting in Chicago Feb. 26-28.

 

California Association of Dental Plans (CADP) Legislative Conference

NADP Director of Government Relations Kris Hathaway represented NADP members at the Feb. 10-13 CADP Legislative Conference in Sacramento.

 

2014 Program Integrity Summit

Dr. Stephanie Lepsky, OptumInsight, is representing the dental benefits industry Feb. 24-25 at the 2014 Program Integrity Summit for Medicaid, CHIP and Title V Oral Health Program Policymakers and Stakeholders in Washington, D.C.  Dr. Lepsky is presenting challenges regarding areas of fraud, abuse and waste.  She is also contributing to a list of Risk Management strategies that will be developed at the summit and may be distributed to the broader stakeholder community.

Employee Benefit News – Reporter Michael Giardina interviewed NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland regarding the effect ACA will have on dental service in medical plans, and how dental savings plans can help out both employers and employees

Kaiser Health News – NADP provided background information on a piece by Marissa Evans regarding how consumers are feeling about the premium rates of dental plans in the exchange and why premiums are higher in some states.

Dr. Bicuspid – Reporter Donna Domino interviewed NADP Executive Director Evelyn F. Ireland about pediatric dental coverage and the Affordable Care Act.

NADP Press Release – NADP released, NADP Encouraged by Early FFM Enrollments but says, “There’s Still Work to be Done,” which highlighted demand for adult dental coverage and the impact of the IRS ruling on pediatric benefits sold in the Federally-facilitated Marketplace.  The release appeared in business journals, financial news websites and major media markets across the U.S. including Anchorage, Boston, Carlsbad, El Paso, Fort Worth, Jacksonville, Kansas City, Lexington, Macon, Oakland, and Olympia.

Serving as your voice, Deputy Executive Director Timothy L. Brown and Dental Informatics Manager Brian Flynn represented NADP members at the recent Health Level 7 (HL7) meeting in San Antonio, Texas, Jan. 26-30. HL7 workgroups develop the content for electronic transactions standards. As voting members of the HL7 Attachments, Clinical Quality and Electronic Health Records Workgroups, NADP advocates for the unique needs and requirements of dental transactions to ensure your company’s operations run smoothly.

 

X12

Dental Informatics Manager Brian Flynn is advancing the dental industry this week at the X12 Winter Meeting in Birmingham, Alabama. As the vice-chair of the Dental Caucus, NADP speaks for you in the development of a common uniform business language to streamline your business transactions. As voting member of X12, NADP also works diligently to promote EDI standards across the dental industry.
